Copenhagen Jazz Festival gets ready for a grand celebration of its first 40 editions in 2018
2018 marks Copenhagen Jazz Festival’s 40th edition – a citywide celebration with international headliners, strong artistic curation, a smorgasbord of free concerts throughout Copenhagen and more than 1200 concerts and events in total
Every single summer since 1979 Copenhagen Jazz Festival has been taking over Copenhagen as one of Europe’s most important international music events based on eminent artistic quality and a sharp focus on new acts in both Danish and international jazz. Lasting 10 days, the festival envelops the Danish capital, offering af sumptuous musical feast to the 250,000 guests who join us year after year. Here, the audience can enjoy live jazz on the city’s streets, in its clubs, cafés and concert halls, and at open-air night venues – all in the very heart of historical Copenhagen.
Copenhagen is a beloved destination for tourists – especially the culturally inclined and the jazz curious who can take full advantage of Copenhagen Jazz Festival and its wide selection of events taking place both downtown, on the picturesque city squares and in the living, breathing musical milieus of La Fontaine, The Meat Packing District, Nørrebro and more.
DR Koncerthuset, the historic greenery of central King’s Garden and the picture-perfect seaside at Jazz by the Sea / Islands Brygge are but a few of Copenhagen Jazz Festival’s main venues.
The first four headliners for Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018 are: Brad Mehldau Trio (US), Jeff Beck (UK), Melody Gardot (US) and Tomatito & Michel Camilo (ES/DO)
Brad Mehldau is easily one of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano, while guitar icon Jeff Beck has been phrasing and soloing his way through modern musical history since the 1960s. Melody Gardot is known for her graceful voice, often compared to such greats as Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse and Norah Jones. Lastly, for now, the excellent duo Tomatito & Michel Camilo will present the music from their latest Grammy-awarded offering “Spain Forever” – here, both performers occupy a space which grants them the freedom to explore and emerge with fresh interpretations and visions of classic songs.
